I’m all about trying to be better and better at what I do. I love learning and growing. But where did the notion come from that we have to be perfect?
The monster under the bed
Perfection is a scary thing because it implies you never do anything wrong, and you don’t make mistakes. First of all, that isn’t possible. Second, perfection doesn’t exist, and thirdly, it breeds fear. It breeds fear because you are afraid to show the parts of you that aren’t perfect. It hides the truth and makes you pretend to be something you aren’t.
“I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God’s business.” – Michael J. Fox
Perfection is in the eye of the beholder
What the heck is perfect anyway? No matter what you do, someone isn’t going to like it. Someone would’ve done it differently. But that is actually what is so exciting.
If we were all cookie cutters of each other, everything would be vanilla white. We would all have the same skills, ideas and talents. How boring would that be?
Part of what is beautiful about excellence is it belongs to you. It is your total package and how you bring it together to be your best you.
Don’t wait for perfect
Excellence is you competing against yourself. Perfection is comparing yourself to a measure that doesn’t exist. So many people don’t start because it isn’t perfect. Well, it won’t be, and it certainly won’t even be close on your first attempt. You’ll wait a long time if you wait until it’s perfect.
All you can do
So have a go. See what happens. Make it better each time you try. Work hard, be present, do yourself justice by bringing your full abilities to bear and then let it go.
That’s it. It’s that simple, and that hard.
